Carl Schraubstadter
Carl G. Schraubstadter (1827-1897) – Born in Dresden (now in Germany). Came to America in 1854. Settled first in the Boston area. Married Augusta Stern in 1864. Moved to St.Louis with his wife and children in 1874. Type foundry. My great-great gandfather. I have quite a bit more. I’d love to hear from anyone interested.
Sometimes also spelled Schraubdstader
I am looking for an Ernst Schraubstadter who went to California, m. Ella Bauer, and had a daughter Erna who m.
August Riese about 1820. Do you know of them?
Laura, I responded by email. Let me know what you would like.
About Carl Schraubstadter. I had a book published last year in which the Schraubstadters played significant roles; Carl, Sr., Carl,Jr., Oswald, and William, all typefounders. The book, Recasting a Craft: St. Louis Typefounders Respond to Industrialization, is available from Southern Illinois University Press and from on-line dealers. You can check the index on-line at Amazon to see the Schraubstadter listings. The elder Schraubstadter’s Central Type Foundry became one of the more important type foundries in the country, as did the similar business started by his sons, the Inland Type Foundry in St. Louis. –Bob Mullen
