Last night lots of rain and storm. Trees down. We ate dinner in a dark restaurant. Fireworks cancelled. This morning the lake is like glass and the birds are singing. Nature stopped by, then moved on.

Happy Independence Day
She Didn’t Dress For Me
And just when I start to marvel about the vibrant beauty of summer flowers, I am reminded that nature doesn’t care if I find it beautiful. Humbler flowers still find their admirers in the right moment.
Look at Me
Summer’s palette is here. So many flowers shout out with vibrant colors. Whenever I see something hollering “look-at-me”, I stop to consider what they are really bartering for. I doubt they exist simply to make me happy. Even though they do.
What am I?
In nature as with people there are “individual contributors” and team players: those who stand alone no matter how many others are near, and those whose impact lies in their ability to contribute well as a part of the many. Each has its place and role. Each can make the world a better place.
The Beginning
The Mississippi River begins at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota. We like to visit when we can. I have snapshots of my younger self here. And of my daughter. And my grandkids. I think there is even a picture of my father long ago dipping his feet in this water. I like to imagine how…
Squirrels with Pearls
What’s Up Buttercup
Polyphemus Moth
I found this beautiful visitor on my doorstep this morning. As big as my hand. Bold yet delicate. Sadly very dead. He (yes “he”) likely lived only four days. Emerged, found a mate, did his duty, died. Not even a moment to eat. Nature certainly packs an amazing amount of care and creation into such…
Looking for a fresh direction
I am trying to get back to sharing my thoughts on a regular basis. But I have to learn the entire process again. This is not a real post. This is only an attempt to create a test bed to see how images and text present themselves in a longer post. Then it is time…
Happy Birthday Dad
So, today is Dad’s birthday. It’s a big one and deserves a lovely picture here to commemorate it. But, as I shuffled through the mountain of family photos for one that represented him well, I noticed something. His absence from the frame. Not because he wasn’t there. It was because he was ALWAYS there, behind…
It is as it should be….
I come from a line (two lines actually) of strong women. Women of imagination and interests who found wonder in what they saw. Women who educated themselves, and sought opportunities to know and contribute to the world around them. Creative women who found joy in what they could make, and what they could share. Women…

The End
My hip has been hurting lately. Actually my hip, my knee, my ankle. It’s the result of getting older. (ouch) I’m planning on another 30 to 40 years of use. But, already my parts are wearing out. The doctor has already mentioned the possibility of a hip replacement. I recognize the value of such replacments….
Spring is here
P4020016 Originally uploaded by jhjohnso. In my garden, the first flowers of spring are always the snowdrops. They aren’t very showy. But, when they poke their clean white heads up through all that gray winter litter…. what a joy!
Up Fox
Looking up Fox Street toward Willow Drive. Foxwillow…. get it?
To Sir With Love
Last summer, I spent a week at ‘La Maison du Patchwork’ in Chateauponsac, France. My mother and I had a wonderful time, good people, good food, good conversation. A special member of our group was our hosts’ English bulldog, Sir. Sir was wonderfully friendly and enthusiastic. He would leap with gusto at every opportunity to…

I’ve always wanted to try this
When the thermometer hits the “below zeroes” and the weather reports are full of dire safety warnings, haven’t you ever wondered “just how cold is it, really?” For instance, is it cold enough to freeze water in the air, before it hits the ground? In fact, as you can see here….yes, it is. Our test…
Brrrr…..
Today is going to be cold here in Minnesota. I have friends who are experiencing their first winter. They have been feeling sure that they have seen the worst. But all they have really had is a little discomfort and inconvenience. Now it will plunge to far below zero. It will be more than uncomfortable….
